Bikestravaganza: Off the Chainring in Denver

Last Thursday was the first official event in the Denver Zine Library, even before our grand re-opening coming up on September 6 (keep an eye out for details). We welcomed Elly Blue and Joe Biel on their tour, Bikestravaganza: Off the Chainring!

Joe and Elly with the traveling version of Microcosm Publishing

It was a cozy night since the crowd was small, but everyone was excited to talk about and learn about bike culture in Denver and around the country (with extra emphasis on Portland, where our fabulous presenters/performers reside). We chatted about Critical Mass, B-Cycle, bike lanes, safety, creative bike events and just how much we love biking.

Many thanks to Elly and Joe for coming to Denver and spending a lovely evening with us!

The DZL moves to the 27 Social Centre!

After several months in temporary storage, the Denver Zine Library is thrilled to be moving into the 27 Social Centre with some other amazing projects.

On July 11, 2010, Kelly and Dylan helped other folks from the 27 Social Centre build a wall for the Denver Zine Library…

On July 25, Carolyn, Squee, Angela, B, Kelly, Ellen, Molly and Kevin moved everything from storage to the new space… (Many thanks to Carolyn for graciously housing the collection in the storage area of her apartment building.)

On August 15, EJ, B, Kelly and Kevin built the shelves and started unpacking…

We still have some unpacking and decorating to do, but we’re really excited about how everything is coming together. Many thanks to our generous donors of furniture (Whitney and a local nonprofit) and Dylan, Kristy and Kelly for moving it. More photos coming soon!

Zine Making Class at Fancy Tiger

Located at Fancy Tiger, 1 South Broadway

Learn how to make a zine! This class is for people who aren’t really sure what a zine is as well as veteran zinesters looking for new ideas. Taught by a Denver Zine Librarian, you will hear about the history of zines and the local zine community, see several options for zine layouts, and learn the mechanics of assembling a zine. Come with some creative ideas and leave with a starter zine. Class fee includes all materials.

Outdoor Movie Night

The Denver Zine Library is Deproduction’s community partner for this fabulous summer-night event.  We will be projecting a movie on the side of the new Art Museum.  Just come by the parking lot at 13th and Bannock.  Don’t forget something to sit on (to cushion the concrete) and a snack if you’d like.

Three-Part Party / Fundraiser

There are always lots of reasons to throw parties. So, here are three reasons you should come to this one.

1. Zine Release Party: Forget Portland, Denver is the new hub of awesome zinesters. Come and mingle with these famous locals who are putting out amazing zines (Eleanor, Andie, Shannon, Anna, Kelly and more).

2. Denver Zine Library Fundraiser: The Denver Zine Library needs your support. We’re asking that you bring a few dollars to donate to this fabulous community resource with over 6,500 different zines from all over the world.

3. Farewell Party: Kelly is going to be leaving Denver on March 21st to get ready for The Tranny Roadshow. Come say goodbye and bring him lots of hugs. Don’t worry, he’ll be back in early May.

The party will be at Anna and Kelly’s house.

Happy 2nd Birthday Denver Zine Library

The Denver Zine Library is now the cutest darn toddler you’ll ever see. At two years old, we now have over 6,500 zines from all over the world.

To celebrate, join us for a delicious vegan potato bar (complete with baked, mashed and fried potatoes). Listen to local zinesters read from their zines. Then, compete in a delightful round of badminton.
