“In the hands of Ryka Aoki, words can be everything – a tool, a fire, a gift, a weapon, a meal, a barricade, a refuge. I was tempted to ration this book, so I’d have some when I needed it, but found myself gulping it down and was so nourished by it the whole way along.”

–S. Bear Bergman, The Nearest Exit May be Behind You, and Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation.

Seasonal Velocities invites the reader on a fragile and furious journey along the highways and skyways of discovery, retribution, and resolve. Through her poetry, essays, stories, and performances, award-winning writer Ryka Aoki has consistently challenged, informed, and enthralled queer audiences across the United States.

Please check it out and donate!

8 years and going strong!

The Denver Zine Library (DZL) first opened its doors on December 5, 2003 thanks to the hard work of some dedicated volunteers. Since then, the DZL has moved locations a few times and is now housed in the incredible 27 Social Centre. We are an all-volunteer run, 501(c)(3) nonprofit lending library with over 10,000 donated and cataloged zines on our shelves! We’ve been grateful for the amazing support over the years from zinesters, community members and rad touring folks who have come through and really promoted the power and importance of zines. Read more about the DZL’s history!

The power of zines

Over the years, the Denver Zine Library has hosted events and workshops, teaching youth, students and community members how to give power to their own voices. When so many of us do not see ourselves reflected in mainstream media, zines give us the ability to tell our own stories and to personally connect with other people. This connection is what makes this medium so exciting! We can find folks who share our experiences and our interests.

We need your financial support to help maintain the DZL as well as give us the ability to plan the next Denver Zine Fest! The Denver Zine Fest has brought together local zinesters, artists, poets as well as folks from around the country to showcase, sell and trade their zines.

What We Need & What You Get

The DZL is asking for your financial support to maintain and expand what we can offer our community, both in the Denver area as well as the zine community at large. Sponsor a zine workshop (at community centers, libraries and classrooms) for $50. Cover the cost of one month’s rent for $100. Help us raise at least $500 towards the planning of the next Denver Zine Fest! Spread the word to your friends and pen pals!

For your fabulous support, check out the perks on the right of this page!

Want more information? Check out our website or e-mail us at denverzinelibrary@gmail.com to be added to our monthly e-mail list or find out how to volunteer!

Rad Dad: Dispatches from the Frontiers of Fatherhood

ImageSaturday, December 17 at 1pm
At the Denver Zine Library
2727 W 27th Ave, Denver CO 80211 (entrance on right of building, through alley)

The Denver Zine Library is thrilled to host a family friendly reading featuring Tomas Moniz, the founder, editor and writer for the incredible zine, Rad Dad! We’ll have some local readers as well. There will be crafts, kids’ books and zines, and the Nurturing Liberation playroom for kids too. Bring some money to buy your own copy of this awesome book. Donations to the Denver Zine Library are also gladly accepted.

“Rad Dad: Dispatches from the Frontiers of Fatherhood” combines the best pieces from the award-winning zine Rad Dad and from the blog Daddy Dialectic, two kindred publications that have tried to explore parenting as political territory. Both of these projects have pushed the conversation around fathering beyond safe, apolitical focus most books and websites stick to; they have not been complacent but have worked hard to create a diverse, multi-faceted space in which to grapple with the complexity of fathering.

Today more than ever, fatherhood demands constant improvisation, risk and struggle. With grace, honesty and strength, Rad Dad’s writers tackle all the issues that other parenting guides are afraid to touch: the brutalities, beauties, and politics of the birth experience, the challenges of parenting on an equal basis with mothers, the tests faced by transgender and gay fathers, the emotions of sperm donation, and parental confrontations with war, violence, racism, and incarceration. Rad Dad is for every father out in the real world trying to parent in ways that are loving, meaningful, authentic, and ultimately revolutionary.

Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore reading at the 27 Social Centre, 7/23/11

Join us on Saturday, July 23 at 7:00pm at the 27 Social Centre -2727 W 27th Ave (entrance around right side of building)
$5-10 sliding scale to benefit the Denver Zine Library and Sent(a)Mental Studios

Described as “startlingly bold and provocative” by Howard Zinn and “a cross between Tinkerbell and a honky Malcolm X with a queer agenda” by the Austin Chronicle, Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore will be in Denver on Saturday, July 23 to read from her newest novel, So Many Ways to Sleep Badly. The event is a benefit for the Denver Zine Library and Sent(a)mental Studios, and books will be available for sale. This is Mattilda’s first appearance in Denver, so join us in a warm welcome!!!

Praise for So Many Ways to Sleep Badly:

“A gender-bending novel [that] unearths subjects still relatively untouched in popular culture… you’re not going to be reading anything similar elsewhere.”
–The Times (London)

“When I read the first chapter of the newest novel by San Francisco poster child for surviving-and-thriving gender/queer punks everywhere, I felt like I was being yelled at by an excited, manic friend who was pacing around a roach-infested kitchen, occasionally breaking into a runway walk while wearing hot pants made of burnt rainbow flags… The rapid-fire, honest glimpse into the post-gay ruins of San Francisco will likely break even the toughest punk heart.”
— NOW Magazine (Toronto)

“Like William S. Burroughs meets David Sedaris, offering a sort of surreal urban grit with poisoned-arrow that stings and sometimes reveals.”
— San Francisco Chronicle

Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore’s exhilarating new novel is about struggling to find hope in the ruins of everyday San Francisco — battling roaches, Bikram Yoga, chronically bad sex, NPR, internet cruising, tweakers, the cops, $100 bills, chronic pain, the gay vote, vegan restaurants, and incest, with the help of air-raid sirens, herbal medicine, late-night
epiphanies, sea lions, and sleeping pills. So Many Ways to Sleep Badly unveils a gender-bending queer world where nothing flows smoothly, except for those sudden moments when everything becomes lighter or brighter or easier to imagine.

Writer, activist, artist, filmmaker and social critic Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore is the author of two novels, So Many Ways to Sleep Badly and Pulling Taffy, and the editor of four nonfiction anthologies, most recently Nobody Passes: Rejecting the Rules of Gender and Conformity and an expanded second edition of That’s Revolting! Queer Strategies for Resisting Assimilation. Utne Reader recently named Mattilda one of “50 Visionaries Changing Your World.” Her next anthology, Why Are Faggots So Afraid of Faggots?: Flaming Challenges to Masculinity, Objectification, and the Desire to Conform, will be out just in time for Valentine’s Day 2012 – talk about romance! Say hello at mattildabernsteinsycamore.com.

You won’t want to miss this fabulous multimedia zine reading featuring: Spencer Keralis, Mariette Papić (streaming live from New York), and Tim Davids!

Spencer Keralis is the founding editor of Laughing Mouse Press, a small press specializing in hand-made books based in Littleton, Colorado. His poetry and short fiction have appeared in Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet, The Dry Crik Review of Contemporary Cowboy Poetry, and The Owen Wister Review. His poetry is collected in the retrospective Geography & Circumstance (2009). Spencer’s scholarly work has appeared in Book History and Texte und Töne, and he maintains an occasional blog on critical theory and digital humanities at www.researchanddestroy.net His interest in book history led him to the book arts, and he teaches bookbinding classes to DIY-minded crafters. He has received research fellowships from the Library Company of Philadelphia and the American Antiquarian Society, and was awarded the 2009 Tuttleton Prize for Research in American Literature by New York University’s Department of English, and the 2010 Book History Essay Prize. In 2011, Spencer launched the interview blogazine 12 Questions (www.12questions.us) with collaborator Becky Hensley.

Mariette Papić was born in Newark, NJ. She is a photographer and writer who expands memoir through an ongoing series of conversations focused on the conscious and subconscious experience. Her work focuses on currents in technology, myth and language. Brooklyn based, Mariette currently lives a semi-nomadic, cyber life while working on her projects, and her on-going series of disembodied poetics and mixed media, “The Life of Ruby Gold.”

Tim Davids’ parents got him a video camera for his fifth birthday, and in 1991 his grandma let him stay home from school to see The Last Boyscout, which effectively screwed them out of having a kid who was not a filmmaker. His films have shown at the Doorpost Film Festival, the Boulder Fringe Festival, the Oriental Theater, and in countless living rooms during house parties. In addition to making DIY films, ever since winning the Denver Young Authors competition with his story “Terrible the Bulldog” nineteen years ago, Tim has continued to write and, though he claims to not be very good, he does so for the Westword Arts and Culture blog “Show and Tell,” and for Popular Lemonade. A social media Renaissance man, Tim blogs, he tumbls, he tweets (as 2509), and he also dances (but only alone in his room).
